Katahdins are hair sheep. Unlike wool sheep, they should completely shed their hair in the summer and never require sheering. They typically lamb 3 times in a 2 year span and often have twins or triplets. Hair sheep are raised specifically for meat as they produce no wool. Katahdins are very hardy and easy keepers. All of our lambs are pasture born. We have found Katahdin ewes to be excellent mothers.
We do have a few other hair sheep crosses but mostly focus on katahdins. We currently have a registered Katahdin ram and are recording all of our replacement ewes as 50% Registered Katahdin.
Our sheep are raised exclusively on pasture with high quality, free choice minerals throughout spring, summer and into the all. Throughout the winter, we feed high quality hay, continue with free choice minerals and supplement with a small amount of grain (grown on our farm), as needed to maintain the body condition of our flock. We use no hormones!
Our lamb meat does not have a strong taste like what you may have experienced from grocery store bought lamb! (Most Lamb meat in the grocery store is imported from New Zealand or Australia unless specifically labeled American Lamb.) Our Lamb meat is lean and mild, yet very tasty. Grass fed lamb meat is generally more flavorful, and from a fat breakdown content, healthier than grain fed meat.

Our Lamb Meat is sold as "exclusively grass fed" with no hormones ever. Our "exclusively grass fed" lambs have never been fed grain. This produces a very lean meat. Our "grass fed" lambs are predominantly raised on grass and hay but have been supplemented with grain if carried through the winter months. If slaughter during the winter months, this meat may have slightly more marbling but otherwise will be indistinguishable from the exclusively grass fed animal. These tend to be larger lambs, so the overall take home meat from one lamb with be more. Our "grain fed" lambs will be fed grain for about 6 weeks prior to slaughter. This will produce a nicely marbled meat that is slightly sweeter in taste. This will be a heavier lamb with more take home meat.
We use a USDA meat processor. Lamb will come packaged and processed into specific cuts according to customers preference.
